Sundered from the Ordinary: Introducing the Sundries Collection

The Art of the Sundry: Small Essentials, Distinct Quality

In the modern world, we tend to think of "sundries" as an afterthought—the miscellaneous bits at the bottom of a shopping bag. But at the Mercantile, we prefer the older definition.

Derived from the Old English syndrig—meaning separate or distinct—Sundries were historically the items "sundered" from bulk goods. They are the specific, vital essentials that complete a kit. They are the bridge between raw utility and field comfort.

Our new Sundries Collection curates these sundered essentials, bringing together high-quality goods from our trusted partners like United By Blue and The Vermont Flannel Co.

What Exactly Defines a "Sundry"?

In the world of mass production, the term "sundries" has been diluted to mean "miscellaneous." But for the woodsman, the traveler, or the craftsman, a sundry is anything but random.

To us, a sundry must meet three criteria:

  1. Portability: It fits in a pocket, a rucksack side-pouch, or a glove box.
  2. Specific Utility: It solves a singular, distinct problem (like keeping your dog secure or your coffee hot).
  3. Enduring Quality: Just because an item is small doesn't mean it should be disposable.

Featured Sundries: The Field-Ready Edit

We’ve hand-picked items that prove "small" doesn't mean "insignificant." Whether you’re prepping for a weekend in the woods or just a walk around the block, these essentials earn their keep.

Featured Makers:

We’ve vetted these makers so you don't have to.

Curated EDC & Field Gear

When we built the Sundries Collection, we focused on Everyday Carry (EDC) essentials—those distinct items you reach for every single day. Whether you’re looking for sustainable camping gear, American-made flannel accessories, or durable dog gifts, we’ve vetted the best of the best.

The Mercantile isn't just a shop; it’s a living archive. We spend our time "in the weeds" vetting independent American workshops to ensure every item—from small-batch apothecary goods to hand-cut flannel—meets our standards for heritage-quality craftsmanship.

These aren't miscellaneous items; they are the best outdoor gifts for those who value products that last a lifetime.

Don’t miss a find. We introduce new partner drops and field gear frequently. To stay in the loop on the latest arrivals and Logbook updates, consider joining our mailing list or checking back regularly. As the seasons change, so does the gear—and we’re just getting started.
