While this sugar occurs naturally in the tree sap, the FDA classifies it as an 'Added Sugar' because it is a concentrated sweetener. To avoid consumer confusion, FDA guidelines allow pure maple syrup labels to list the % Daily Value of these sugars without requiring a gram amount on the 'Added Sugars' line, clarifying that no outside sweeteners have been added.
